Temporary Land Conservation Assistant

Position Description

Defenders of Wildlife, a leading conservation organization with over 500,000 members and supporters, seeks a Temporary Land Conservation Assistant to work on the Living Lands project.  The Living Lands project works with local land trusts to strengthen their capacity to conserve wildlife habitat and biodiversity.  This position is primarily responsible for national outreach to and research on land trusts with secondary responsibilities related to general project assistance.  In addition to working on core projects, s/he will be exposed to a variety of programmatic experience on conservation issues of national significance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with land trust research and outreach through personal telephone interviews and written surveys to gauge land trust capacity, interest in habitat conservation, and challenges toward achieving biodiversity conservation
  • Assist with analysis of regional interview and survey results and compile reports based on these results
  • Help to identify land trusts that could most benefit from Living Lands project assistance
  • Research and compile regional factsheets of relevant "land use practitioners" who may provide tools or services for local land trusts
  • Other various projects include assistance with Web content development and/or organization; research on state Farm Bill program policies; global climate change models/studies; and planning initiatives such as State Wildlife Action Plans
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:  Bachelor’s (B.A./B.S.) degree or equivalent in natural resources or related discipline

Experience:  1+ years of experience in land conservation or policy and familiarity with conservation biology principles and biodiversity concepts

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

Other Qualifications:

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Basic familiarity with land trusts preferred
  • Technological aptitude with working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Expected to work independently and/or as a team member with initiative, motivation, flexibility, and attention to accuracy of projects and tasks
