Senior Accountant
Location: Washington, D.C.Supervisor: Director of Finance/Controller
Position Description
The Senior Accountant
performs duties in the areas of general ledger, bank
reconciliation, and accounting for the Membership area. The Accountant prepares
various general ledger and sub-ledger account reconciliations and analyses;
prepares ledger adjustments; enters transactions to the computerized accounting
system; and assists with year-end audit preparation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Handles monthly account reconciliation for primary bank account and prepares related monthly journal entries
- Reconcile Sustainers’ bank account
- Import non-sufficient funds checks directly into Solomon using the Excel import system
- Verifies quarterly petty cash and cash account reconciliations
- Ensures that all bank accounts are reconciled on a timely basis
- Prepares weekly cash reports and monitors daily cash balances while keeping senior management informed of any cash flow concerns
- Investments, including journal entries (interest, gains and losses, etc.) and investment account reconciliations
- Monitors all invoicing related to direct mail/Membership and ensures proper coding and accrual for this activity, and interacts with various Membership staff members to obtain the required information
- Reviews Membership reports for reasonableness and accuracy
- Handles monthly general ledger account reconciliations
- Reconciles various asset, liability, income, and expense accounts on a monthly basis
- Assists with preparation of year-end audit schedules
- Assist with the preparation of the lobby report
- Maintains written procedures for all Senior Accountant functions
- Performs all other related o ther duties as assigned, including occasional back-up support for other Finance and Administration department staff members.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) in Accounting or equivalentExperience: 3+ years of accounting experience; experience in a non-profit environment preferred.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
Certification/Licensure: CPA preferred.
Other Qualifications:
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills
- Ability to learn processes and procedures in a fast-paced working environment
- Strong computing and technology skills, particularly with Microsoft Excel program
- Experience with computerized accounting software; Solomon and FRX preferred
- Ability to be productive in both a team culture and/or independently
- Ability to adapt well in a changing organizational culture
- Able to manage time effectively; produce high-quality work; and interact well with others
