Northern Rockies Representative

Location: Bozeman, MT
Supervisor: Director of Rocky Mountain Region

Position Description

This professional-level position is responsible for developing regional conservation objectives and strategies in the Northern Rockies and working with other staff in implementing the overall mission and goals of Defenders.  Current projects include 1) Administration of the Grizzly Bear Compensation Fund and Proactive Carnivore Conservation Fund; 2) Oversight of issues related to conservation and management of grizzly bears and grizzly bear habitat; 3) Reintroduction of grizzly bears to the Bitterroot ecosystem; and 4) related grizzly bear and Northern Rockies wildlife conservation duties and outreach and education activities as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Influence Federal and state wildlife policy through administrative, legislative, and judicial forums, using a range of strategies including but not limited to:
    -     Direct and grassroots lobbying in the U.S. Congress and appropriate legislatures
    -     Seeking policy and programmatic changes in relevant state and federal agencies
    -     Recommending litigation where appropriate and provide technical support
    -     Public media representation and outreach establishing Defenders in core environmental and conservation issues reflective of the professional nature and objectives of the organization
  • Cooperate with and form effective partnerships with other organizations and individuals who share Defenders' goals, or are in a position to assist in a particular way
  • Represent Defenders in relevant working groups and committees
  • Assist the public and member education process on key issues through news media, public appearances, dissemination of educational materials, and Defenders magazine
  • Assist the National Headquarters office in providing information to members, foundations, and other donors in the region, and help identify and develop potential sources of funding for Defenders
  • Develop a network of experts and grassroots activists to assist Defenders in accomplishing its objectives
  • Identify key information relating to policy, strategy, and decision-making, and communicate it as appropriate and in a timely manner to the immediate supervisor and other relevant staff members
  • Maintain a complete and well-organized collection of information relevant to regional issues, and assist the National Headquarters office in mailings and e-mail alerts
  • Supervise support staff, volunteers, and contractors
  • Submit timely and complete accounting of activities and expenses to immediate supervisor
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:  Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in resource management, policy, education, law, or other relevant field; Advanced degree preferred.

Experience: 5+ years of experience working for conservation organizations and demonstrated knowledge about natural resource issues and policy

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

  • Ability to work independently to initiate project ideas as well as to manage them through to completion
  • Ability to work constructively as a member of a team
